INCREASE IN SEED COLLECTIONS

INCREASE IN SEED COLLECTIONS

The seed collections of the Germplasm Bank of the University of Catania were integrated by collecting some of the species from the growth habitat of Anthemis aeolica, on the islet of Lisca Bianca (Panarea, Aeolian Islands), such as:

  • Dianthus rupicola subsp. aeolicus (Lojac.) Brullo & Miniss.
  • Helichrysum litoreum Guss.
  • Hyoseris taurina (Pamp.) Martinoli
  • Limonium minutiflorum (Guss.) Kuntze
  • Lotus cytisoides L.
  • Senecio leucanthemifolius Poir.
  • Silene neglecta Ten.

These seeds, in addition to being conserved ex situ, are used to redevelop, on Lisca Bianca, the area freed from the invasive exotic species Carpobrotus acinaciformis (L.) L. Bolus

Seeds were also collected from populations and species from other islands of the Aeolian archipelago, such as:

  • Centaurea aeolica Guss. ex Lojac.
  • Clematis flammula L.
  • Cytisus aeolicus Guss.
  • Daucus carota subsp. carota var. foliosus (Guss.) Paoletti
  • Matthiola incana (L.) W.T.Aiton
  • Vicia altissima Desf.

Finally, to promote knowledge of the native flora and its ornamental potential, seeds of some spontaneous Mediterranean species were collected. These seeds, packaged in sachets, are offered to visitors of the BGs-CT and to the public who participate in the dissemination events. Among the species covered by this initiative are:

  • Achillea ligustica All.
  • Asphodeline lutea (L.) Rchb.
  • Matthiola incana (L.) R. Br.
  • Silene colorata Poir.
  • Silene vulgaris (Moench) Garcke
  • Spartium junceum L.
  • Tanacetum siculum (Guss.) Strobl.
  • Verbascum macrurum Ten.
  • Verbascum thapsus L.

Seeds of rare endemic and indigenous plants have been collected by the University of Malta to enhance the seed bank accessions. Seeds of these species that were collected during the period March to September 2023, dried, cleaned and accessioned include:

  • Allium commutatum Guss.
  • Delphinium halteratum Sm.
  • Helichrysum melitense [Helichrysum panormitanum subsp. melitense (Pignatti) Iamonico & Pignatti]
  • Matthiola incana subsp melitensis Brullo, Lanfr., Pavone & Ronsisv.
  • Ononis natrix L.
  • Periploca angustifolia Labill.
  • Plantago major L.
  • Ruta chalepensis L.
  • Trifolium retusum L.
  • Vicia hirsuta (L.) Gtay.
